You can’t visit the Big Apple without shopping! I mean, you just CAN’T!
When I travel to NYC, which I do often because I LOVE IT, I like to shop at Mercer Street. It’s less touristy than Fifth Avenue or Madison Avenue and is cute to boot with it’s cobblestoned streets and loft like spaces. The onetime artists’ mecca has morphed into a funky shopping strip in the Soho district, which is one block west of Broadway located in lower Manhattan.
Fashion royalty Anna Wintour and SJP rate the Mercer strip among their faves so you’re in good “shopping” company here. You’ll find Alexander Wang, Helmut Lang, Marni, A.P.C. Don’t forget to also check out Paige Denim and the world’s coolest NIKE store. Phew…well, that should keep you busy for a while!
An excellent idea is to rest your weary feet at the chic Mercer Kitchen. Book prior to going because this swanky spot fills up quickly. If you just turn up you may be on the wait list with the likes of Brad and Ange, Gwyneth, Kanye and the Olsen twins who are regulars, and I wouldn’t like anyone’s chances in that case.
The Mercer Kitchen does delicious food ranging from a fancy a la carte menu to a casual pizza or burger and to “die for” fries!
I also love the famous Manhattan bistro Balthazar which is just around the corner on Spring Street. Their coffee is a great way to start the day and they are huge so it takes the guilt out of having more than one cup in the morning. Bonus!
Fifth Avenue is fun! I love just strolling along people watching and popping into all the designer stores to see the latest trends and to occasionally indulge in a cheeky purchase or two! It has all of the big labels GUCCI, FENDI, Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany and Co…all the goodies! If you’re up for a splurge Fifth is your answer! There’s also great and stylish affordable shopping at Abercrombie & Fitch and Zara to name just a couple.
Pop into SAKS Fifth Avenue for Major American and European designers and to check out their gorgeous make-up department.
Bergdorf Goodman is a shopping mecca that is also located on Fifth. I love to have morning tea at the roof top restaurant. For $35 dollars you will be full to the brim after plenty of scones and sandwiches…never-mind, shopping is exercise in my book, those calories don’t even count! Drool over the massive bag collection not to mention the second-floor shoe salon, Ooohhhh!
The “haute strip” has 15 blocks of celebrity designer shops Calvin Klein, Giorgio Armani, Kate Spade and flagship fashion-house boutiques such as Prada, Hermes and Chanel. Start at Mulberry on 57th Street and finish all the way up at Ralph Lauren on 72nd, then you’ll have it covered! Barneys New York on Madison Ave is the flagship store. On the lower floors are expensive items like Prada suits, the upstairs Co-op department is where you’ll find rag and bone jeans, Alexander Wang dresses and oversize Helmut Lang tees.
You’ll definitely be needing a “Manhattan” at the end of your shopping days in New York City…with an extra shot of whiskey!
Happy Shopping! Laura xx
